In Hong Kong, you have to win the lottery to buy an iPhone (Yahoo! News)

In an effort to combat scalping, Apple will only sell the iPhone 4S to lottery winners in the Chinese territor??

Think lining up overnight for an?iPhone launch is bad? Try snagging a new?iPhone 4S in Hong Kong, where?Apple recently implemented a lottery system in an effort to combat scalping. If you're in Hong Kong and want the newest iPhone iteration, forget waking up early to be the first person outside an?Apple Store ? the company doesn't sell any to walk-in customers. You have to first join a lottery on the company's website and?then win before you can even be eligible to buy a unit.

The recent iPhone 4S launch in mainland China was riddled with scalpers, and one particular?incident in Beijing even turned into a brawl fest. This new system is super strict, with the lottery remaining open to entries for only three hours each day. Winners get an email before 9 P.M., and they can claim their iPhone 4S units the next day provided they have a government-issued photo ID with the same name and serial number they submitted to the lottery.

No word yet on whether Apple will implement this lottery system elsewhere, though it may subsequently be used in places where scalping is rampant.

Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) was hit hard pre-market by Wedbush?s lack of confidence. Wedbush believes that Q1 earnings will be poor, and 2012 consensus estimates ill drop a buck a share. Piper Jaffray, for what it?s worth, is optimistic about Netflix, as they think the customer base will stabilize and ultimately grow again.

Halliburton?s?(NYSE:HAL) results came in this morning, and although EPS and revenues beat estimates, the higher expectations of the market were not met. Interesting tidbit: unconventional oil drilling has twice as much activity as unconventional gas drilling.

Amgen (NASDAQ:AMGN): The entire pharmaceutical sector is being downgraded, and Amgen is no exception. Its stock has been downgraded to underweight by JP Morgan.

Sears Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ:SHLD): The performance of this stock has been remarkable: up 69% year to date, the stock jumped by 8% before coming down close to where it started at the beginning of trading. Some believe Sears is now in a classic short squeeze.

Southwestern Energy Co. (NYSE:SWN) popped along with other natural gas producers because the spike of prices and Chesapeake?s planned cuts in production.

Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK): After sinking overnight to $2.20, natural gas futures jumped 6.4% in a matter of minutes. Apparently there were too many short-sellers in the natural gas market, and the market has taken care of them for the time being.

NYS Disability Insurance

Just like life insurance, two fundamental kinds of disability insurance are standard disability insurance (Your organization takes care of these) and private disability insurance (You need to buy these). However, private disability insurance is always costlier than standard disability insurance.

?

As a result, an individual must vigilantly assess his or her company?s plan and come to a decision whether or not he or she needs additional coverage. You can begin by looking for options available with company?s group policy. Some plans permit you to acquire supplementary coverage, so that you can get a cover to recompense more than two third of your wage via that policy often at rates lower than what you would get if you were to hunt for a private plan.

?

Generally, you will find variations in laws across the states. In New York, if an individual is disabled by a sickness or wound when not on the job, NYS disability insurance offers short-term provisional cash assistance to those who are eligible. Such assistance seeks to replace loss of pay due to sickness or wounds incurred. New York State even offers cover for disabilities occurring during pregnancy. Note that injuries, disabilities or sickness arising out of or during service are covered separately under another law.

?

All employers come under the ambit of this law. They need to provide disability insurance benefits to all employees that have successfully completed their probation period. Under the NYS disability insurance, the employer can then purchase group plans from insurance company of its choice. There is also an option to become a self-insurer.

?

If your employer fails to provide for you such a policy, it would amount as an offence under the NYS disability insurance law. When your company?s standard disability insurance seems inadequate, you may want to go for additional cover on your own. When purchasing private disability insurance in the state of New York, here are a few things to bear in mind.

?

In fact, you will come across many terms in a policy document having meanings that may not be clear. Before finalizing a policy, ensure that you have selected options that suit you the best. If you do a bit of research about various New York State disability insurance companies and plans and chose wisely before committing anything, it can result in significant benefits later. Many a times, your agent may not be that knowledgeable about various terms and conditions mentioned. Read the fine print and ensure that you get all your questions or doubts resolved. Contact a company?s customer care representative. Here, you can be sure to find accurate information and guidance over all the policy details.

?

Most disability insurance policies in New York State cover you for a specific period only. There are both short-term and long-term plans. In addition, a company may also provide an option for you to receive disability benefits for the rest of your life. No doubt, these are costlier than a limited term policy. You need to use your own judgment and arrive at a choice. Note that while your company?s group policy will cease when you stop working there, but your private policy is for life. Buying one now is a smarter choice.

?

Another important consideration is the fact that costs in a metropolitan city like New York are likely to be on higher side in the future, whereas your policy takes into account your current income for arriving at a benefit amount. You need to ask if the insurance firm provides any options for you to increase these income levels in the future.

?

There is a waiting period after the date of your sickness or disability before you can start receiving your benefits. Most insurance firms will allot you default duration. Since this affects your premium amount, you need to decide on your waiting period duration. Some people opt for shorter waiting period to ensure safety. Those who keep same savings aside for an emergency can choose to lower their premiums by opting for a longer waiting period.

?

Lastly check out clauses that leave out your pre-existing health conditions or addictive habits. Often a company will not pay you if it discovers that you already contracted an illness or condition at the time of signing up. Thus, it makes sense to purchase such a policy when you are young, healthy and not suffering from any ailment.

'Doritos Girl' Ali Landry Shares Scars From Super Bowl Commercial (omg!)

Ali Landry in 1999 (L) and 2012If you're looking for a textbook example of overnight celebrity, you couldn't do much better than Ali Landry. Landry became a sensation in 1998 when she starred in an ad for Doritos that aired during the Super Bowl and also starred a pre-"Will & Grace" Sean Hayes.

The ad featured Landry performing stunts in a laundromat, much to the delight of her male admirers. To say it helped launch Landry's career would be a huge understatement; the ad changed everything. We caught up with the onetime Miss USA, who has since become a successful businesswoman, to talk about her memories of that famous ad, the scar it left behind, as well as what she's up to now.

The Doritos commercial is one of the iconic ads in Super Bowl history. How did it happen?

I hadn't had many auditions. I'm from a small town in Louisiana. Los Angeles was very overwhelming. I remember walking into this room with wall-to-wall gorgeous girls. And I remember thinking, "I'm not up for this today." I looked at the storyboards. They said, "You sort of have to dance around and do these tricks to James Bond music and pretend you're catching something with your mouth."

I was into dancing and gymnastics my entire life. And I think this is where my experience played a big part. And I got the job. I couldn't believe it. It was my very first commercial. They told me it was going to be on during the Super Bowl. I don't think I'd ever watched the Super Bowl before. My father's a big football fan, but I didn't know the commercials during the Super Bowl were a big deal.

So, we shot the commercial, and it was great and really fun, and I just thought it was really cool that I got a job. And then literally the next day, I had people calling me to see if I could sing, because they wanted to offer me a record deal. It was that crazy.

So there was a series of commercials.

Right. The first one was in a laundromat, and the next was on a tennis court. When we shot the one on the tennis court, they had to glue, with surgical glue, a chip to my forehead, and then they pulled it off with fishing wire. And then, for the commercial, they ran the footage in reverse. Well, I still have that scar from the chip. So, I always say, "I will be forever scarred by Doritos."

So you knew the commercial, the first one, was going to air during the Super Bowl?

I had heard that, but it didn't really faze me because I didn't know the significance of it. I didn't know that these were coveted roles. I didn't know people waited every single year to see what commercials were great. I had no idea.

I remember being at a Super Bowl party, and I didn't tell anyone that the commercial was going to be on. I just really didn't think it was such a big deal. So when it came on and I'm sitting with people who didn't know I was going to be on a commercial during the Super Bowl, and I saw everyone's reaction, it was a bit shocking for me.

Is there anything you regret about those commercials?

No, no, I loved it. It's fun when you're involved with something that people really respond to. Even four or five years after the commercials, people would still say, "Doritos girl." And I didn't mind, because I really had such an incredible experience. People look back on that commercial with really fond memories. For me to be a part of that, it's a good thing. And I've done so many things since then, I'm grateful.

So, you went to L.A. to become an actress. The Doritos commercials must have sped up the process quite a bit.

Actually, I never had aspirations to be an actress. I was in college in Louisiana. I was determined to not have my job be one where I bring somebody coffee. That was really important to me. I was not cut out for that.

I wanted to compete in Miss USA because I figured I could meet some great people and get a good job. After Miss USA, that brought me out to L.A. I wasn't even really interested in signing with an agency, but a friend of mine from Louisiana worked at William Morris. I met the agent, and I remembered I totally botched up the interview, because I said I wanted to be a businesswoman.

Then, after the Doritos commercial aired and I started getting all these calls, it forced me to re-evaulate my goals and look at the opportunities that were in front of me at the time. That's when I decided to get into acting. Even as a child, I've been involved with everything. I performed, and I danced, so it was definitely something I always enjoyed, but it wasn't my goal.

And what are you up to now? You now have a children's clothing line, correct?

I do have a children's clothing line. I just sold my very first television show. That's going to be on the TV Guide Network. I have a product review website I'm about to launch, called 'Spokesmoms.' I feel like, over the past two years, I've come into my own. I have a family now. I feel like I'm doing exactly what I was meant to do.

It sounds like you were right when you said you wanted to be a businesswoman. Because that's what you are today.

Yes. I do love that. But I also love creating things. It's very exciting to me to go out and sell a project, pitch a project.

It's fair to say your life has changed dramatically since the Doritos days.

Yes, dramatically. But I would have to say Doritos really opened the door for me.

Would you ever consider doing another commercial for Doritos, a sequel?

If they would have me, I would absolutely do it.

When a child makes his own stuffed animal, there is a sense of pride and ownership that does not come with a purchased pre-stuffed, stuffed animal. You can buy Wuggle Pets in a two pack, which comes with Playful Puppy and Magical Unicorn. Each animal comes with a clip so a child can attach it to their backpack, suitcase or anywhere they want to travel with them.?? The Wuggle Pets, party pack is made especially for a child?s party or if a child wants to collect them all.? The Party Pack comes with Cuddle Puppy, Magical Unicorn, Funny Monkey, Sunny Bunny, Earful Elephant, Playful Pony, Clever Raccoon, and Bashful Bear. All eight pets in the Party Pack come with their own adoption papers for personalization, fluff, 12 charms per animal, magic dust, and two zipper-up tools.? Only one fun fill factory comes with this set of eight. If a person decides to purchase the Party Pack, there is a discount in price, which could make this an ideal craft for a slumber party or as a pastime for children.

And you can follow along with Wuggle Pets via Twitter, Facebook, or see them on You Tube. This toy is meant for children ages 4 and up.

Is moon base really the 'weirdest' Newt Gingrich idea? Maybe not.

Newt Gingrich once wrote a bill that proposed to clarify when a moon base could apply for statehood. He admitted the bill was a bit odd Wednesday. But it might now prove to be a stroke of brilliance.?

Newt Gingrich wants to establish a colony on the moon, in case you haven?t heard. At a campaign stop on Florida?s Space Coast Thursday he promised that the US would have a permanent lunar base by the end of his second term in the Oval Office.

He talked about it as if it would be a lunar Plymouth, mankind?s brave foray into a lunar unknown, though he himself did not make that direct comparison. He even put out some ideas as to how the place should be governed.

When Moon Base Gingrich holds enough people, it should apply for statehood, he said.

?I think the moon primary would come late in the [campaign] season,? he said, smiling. This was either hubristic or charmingly self-aware, depending on how one views the prospect of the former speaker in the White House.

As Gingrich noted Wednesday, he?s outlined his ideas for space self-government before. As a young member of Congress in 1981, he introduced a bill he now refers to as the Northwest Ordinance for Space, but back then went by the more prosaic name of National Aeronautics and Space Policy Act of 1981.

BuzzFeed has dug up an actual copy of this legislation from the Library of Congress, and it?s pretty interesting. Much of it consists of an order to NASA to set 30-year goals for everything from a new ?operational world information system? (Newt invented the Internet!) to manned Mars and moon missions.

Title IV covers ?Government of Space Territories.? It begins in a sweeping manner: all persons residing in any US space community (which could be anywhere from the moon to Jupiter, we guess) ?shall be entitled to the protection of the Constitution of the United States.?

Wow ? this means that any terror suspect caught at a US moon base couldn?t be shipped to Guant?namo, right? Also, any baby born to an illegal US moon base immigrant would be a US citizen, raising the possibility of moon birth tourism.

The second section of Title IV says that when a US space colony holds 20,000 people, it will be able to hold a convention to establish a constitution and form of self-government for itself. Kind of like Philadelphia in 1787, only with external oxygen supplies.

Title IV?s third section establishes that whenever said space colony holds the same number of people as the least populous US state (right now, that?s Wyoming, at 544,270) it will be admitted as a US state ?on an equal footing with the original states.?

That raises a question ? if you?re the senator from the moon, would you get in trouble with constituents for not traveling home often enough to take the pulse of Tranquility Base? Because you probably couldn?t do that Friday-to-Monday.

Anyway, Gingrich himself kind of poked fun at himself for all this, saying that he?s old enough to have read ?Missiles & Rockets Magazine? as a kid, and that the whole thing might be the ?weirdest? policy idea he?s ever proposed.

But let?s be honest ? he?s running a Florida primary, and Florida?s Space Coast right now suffers from high unemployment. Gingrich might be crazy like a space fox here.?

Slate?s Dave Weigel wrote about Gingrich?s speech under the head ?Not Actually Crazy.?

?It?s an idea that makes the New York/Washington-Alinskyite media guffaw. It also happens to be a pander to local voters that no one will try to make,? wrote Mr. Weigel.

After all, in the late 1960s, NASA drew up plans to establish a moon base by 1980 and send men to Mars by 1983. But these were cancelled by then-President Richard Nixon, notes Space.com in an outline of presidential visions for space exploration.

Nixon was worried that the government spending was too high ? and NASA was a convenient target.

Avastin May Be Helpful Before Breast Cancer Surgery (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 25 (HealthDay News) -- The addition of the cancer-fighting medication Avastin to chemotherapy prior to breast cancer surgery increases the chance that all of the cancer will be removed, according to new research.

However, when looking at which patients might benefit the most from this therapy, two recent studies found conflicting results, and neither study was yet able to address whether or not the addition of Avastin (bevacizumab) early in the treatment process would improve survival rates.

Information on survival will be especially important for defining Avastin's role in early breast cancer treatment. That's because in November 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revoked Avastin's approval for the treatment of breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. With metastatic breast cancers, the agency felt the survival benefits were lacking, and the drug carries significant risks. Avastin is, however, still FDA-approved as a treatment for some metastatic colon, brain, kidney and lung cancers.

"The bevacizumab story is not done. The addition of Avastin to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in women with operable breast cancer increased the rate of women having the disappearance of their breast cancer at the time of surgery," said Dr. Harry Bear, lead author of one of the new studies.

"With more follow-up of these trials and several others, we may find that bevacizumab actually does increase the cure rate. But, it may not be for all breast cancers; it may just be for some," said Bear, a professor and chairman of the division of surgical oncology at Virginia Commonwealth University's Massey Cancer Center in Richmond.

Results of the studies are published in the Jan. 26 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Bear's study included more than 1,200 women who had been diagnosed with breast cancer. None of the women had yet had surgery to remove their tumors. All of the women had tumors that were at least 2 centimeters (about 0.8 inches) in diameter, and none had metastatic cancer.

The women received chemotherapy before surgery (neoadjuvant therapy). They were randomly assigned to treatment groups that included the chemotherapy drugs docetaxel, capecitabine and gemcitabine in various doses and combinations. They were also randomly assigned to receive Avastin or not during their first six cycles of chemotherapy.

The study found that adding capecitabine or gemcitabine to docetaxel therapy didn't improve response rates. But the addition of Avastin increased the rate of "pathological complete response" -- meaning the tumor disappeared before surgery -- from 28.2 percent to 34.5 percent, according to the study.

However, the addition of Avastin also increased the risk of serious side effects, such as high blood pressure and heart problems.

The second study, conducted in Germany, included almost 2,000 women with an average tumor size of 4 centimeters (about 1.6 inches). As in Bear's study, the women were randomly assigned to several neoadjuvant chemotherapy groups. In this study, however, treatment was with docetaxel, epirubicin and cyclophosphamide. They were also randomly assigned to receive Avastin or not.

Overall, the odds of pathological complete response were increased by 29 percent with the addition of Avastin. However, when the researchers looked at tumors by hormone receptor status, they found that it was primarily women with triple-negative cancers who showed a significant response to Avastin. Having a triple-negative breast cancer means that a cancer's growth isn't influenced by hormones such as estrogen or progesterone. If a tumor is called hormone receptor-positive, it means that hormones, such as estrogen, can help fuel that cancer's growth.

In Bear's study, the investigators found Avastin had an effect on both hormone receptor-positive and hormone receptor-negative cancers, but there appeared to be slightly more benefit for the hormone receptor-positive women.

Bear said a number of factors could explain these seemingly conflicting findings. The differences may have something to do with the women involved in each study, he said. Some of the women in the German study had more advanced cancers. And, the chemotherapy regimens weren't the same, he explained.

Commenting on the findings, Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, deputy chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society, said that "these studies suggest that for certain patients, there may be a benefit to using Avastin prior to surgery for breast cancer."

However, Lichtenfeld added, "what we don't know from these studies is which women would benefit the most, and we don't have the long-term follow-up on these women to see if the survival or the course of the disease is improved."

Both Lichtenfeld and Bear acknowledged that because Avastin isn't FDA-approved for the treatment of breast cancers, insurance companies may be reluctant to pay for these treatments outside of a clinical trial setting.

"There still remain significant questions about the benefits of using Avastin in breast cancer," Lichtenfeld pointed out. "There is an increased risk of side effects, and there's a cost to adding this treatment. Based on these two studies, it's difficult to say whether any particular women should consider this treatment. As with many similar research findings, it's important to talk to your own doctor to get a better understanding of your potential risks and benefits," he added.

Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Reynolds Have Big Eyes

What would happen if two of your favorite rom-com stars -- Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Reynolds, in this case -- decided to star in a non-rom-com? "Big Eyes," apparently, a new Tim Burton-produced biopic about a pair of dysfunctionally married artists.

Witherspoon and Reynolds are eying the lead in Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski's ("Man on the Moon") artworld picture, about Margaret and Walter Keane, artists of the popular wide-eyed portraits.

Though their art was all the rage of the fifties and sixties, the Keanes did not have the best working relationship. Walter stole his wife's credit, soaking up all the recognition and fame.

"We are ecstatic to have this dream cast for our dream project," Alexander and Karaszewski said in a joint statement. "Walter is a larger-than-life antihero -- charming, funny, dangerous, and a little crazy. Ryan will knock it out of the park. As for Reese, she will be perfect as Margaret -- soulful, decent, transforming from vulnerability to learning to fight for herself."

With wide-eyed, slightly unnerving art, Burton obviously couldn't have been far behind -- he will produce "Big Eyes" through Tim Burton Productions.

Before the they enter the world of arthouse biopics, the two will next star in their respective box offices releases -- Reynolds in the action-thriller "Safe House" and Witherspoon in the love triangle comedy "This Means War;" both are out next month.

Former anti-doping chief accuses NFLPA of stalling (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Dick Pound, the former head of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), has accused the National Football League Players' Association (NFLPA) of using stalling tactics to block the introduction of tests for human growth hormone (HGH).

After years of pressure from anti-doping crusaders and the U.S. government, the NFL and NFLPA agreed to start blood testing for HGH when they signed a new collective bargaining agreement in August.

However Pound, an outspoken critic of North American professional sports that have been slow to embrace doping tests and impose punishments, said the players' union was now trying to delay the procedure by wrongly saying the tests were unreliable.

"The NFLPA have turned to their ubiquitous lawyers to throw as much sand as money can buy into the gears of an effective testing program," Pound wrote in a column on the WADA website (www.wada-ama.org).

"So, the lawyers, in a feat of self-generated alchemy, have turned themselves into scientists and now spout supposedly principled concerns about the reliability of scientific tests for HGH."

The NFLPA issued a sharp rebuke to Pound's remarks, arguing that the tests had not been independently validated and neither Pound nor WADA had provided satisfactory answers.

"The players are not going to let the Dick Pound self-promotional tour derail the principles we believe in related to a clean and fair game," NFLPA spokesman George Atallah told Reuters.

"Our players and scientists have asked WADA for information and transparency. The response from WADA and Dick Pound has been limited to childish public statements that are thickheaded and false."

INDEPENDENT SCIENTISTS

Pound, one of Canada's members on the International Olympic Committee (IOC), said the tests had been validated by independent scientists in 2004 and any suggestion they were unreliable was false.

"The knowledgeable scientific community is satisfied with the reliability of the HGH tests," Pound wrote.

"WADA does not approve anti-doping tests until there is consensus among experts in the particular field that the tests are scientifically reliable and replicable.

"No one wants any athlete to be sanctioned on the basis of a false positive test."

The NFL declined to comment when asked by Reuters although the league has previously been critical of the players' union.

In September last year, a NFL spokesman said: "Although the CBA (collective bargaining agreement) reflects a commitment to implement HGH testing by the start of the regular season, it is apparent we will be unable to do so because of the union's continued refusal to accept the validity of the tests."

The league had heralded the agreement in August, saying it would have made the NFL the first major U.S. professional sports league to use blood testing for HGH.

Pound, who published his column less than two weeks before the Super Bowl, North America's most watched and scrutinized sporting event, said it was time to end the delaying tactics and start testing.

"It is time for the public at large to recognize that it is being manipulated as part of the effort to avoid testing for performance-enhancing substances," Pound wrote.

"If the NFL players claim they are drug-free, they should be ready to prove it and stop hiding behind phoney claims that good science is bad science."

Danish kitchenware supremo Bodum has granted itself a do-over on the worst machine in your kitchen: the coffee-embittering drip machine. The new Bistro is a cross between old-school percolator and currently-fashionable pour-over coffee. And for convenience, it looks hard to beat. Bachmann speaks at St. Paul anti-abortion rally (AP)

ST. PAUL, Minn. ? Rep. Michele Bachmann predicted Sunday that the November elections will end abortion as she made her first public appearance in Minnesota since dropping out of the Republican presidential race.

Bachmann spoke to hundreds of people opposed to legal abortion who traveled on school buses from across the state Sunday to mark the 39th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion, Minnesota Public Radio reported ( http://bit.ly/zIPAwh). The annual rally was sponsored by Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life, which said in a statement that the event drew more than 4,000 people.

Bachmann said the Supreme Court decision should be repealed within the next year.

"Here on our watch we will stand, we will stand for life, we will never forget, we will never give up, and next year we will gather in a day of celebration when we have finally ended abortion in this all important election," she said. "Join me this year. Choose life."

Bachmann has appeared at few public events in Minnesota in the past half-year, when her focus was on her GOP presidential campaign. She dropped out of the race after finishing sixth in Iowa's leadoff caucuses in early January.

She hasn't said if she'll run for a fourth term in Congress, representing suburbs north and east of the Twin Cities. In response to a question from a reporter, she said she'll give interviews soon on the subject.

Republican Reps. Erik Paulson, Chip Cravaack and John Kline also spoke at the event.

Planned Parenthood officials said they'll oppose any action that limits women's access to health care and legal abortion.

Scientists pause research with lab-bred bird flu (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Scientists who created easier-to-spread versions of the deadly bird flu said Friday they're temporarily halting more research, as international specialists debate what should happen next.

Researchers from leading flu laboratories around the world signed onto the voluntary moratorium, published Friday in the journals Science and Nature.

What the scientists called a "pause" comes amid fierce controversy over how to handle research that's high-risk but potentially could bring a big payoff. Two labs ? at Erasmus University in the Netherlands and the University of Wisconsin-Madison ? created the new viruses while studying how bird flu might mutate to become a bigger threat to people.

The U.S. government funded the work but last month urged the teams not to publicly reveal the exact formula so that would-be bioterrorists couldn't copy it. Critics also worried a lab accident might allow the strains to escape. The researchers reluctantly agreed not to publish all the details as long as the government set up a system to provide them to legitimate scientists who really need to know. The National Institutes of Health is creating such a system.

"We recognize that we and the rest of the scientific community need to clearly explain the benefits of this important research and the measures taken to minimize its possible risks," lead researchers Ron Fouchier of Erasmus and Yoshihiro Kawaoka of Wisconsin wrote Friday in the letter. They were joined by nearly three dozen other flu researchers.

They called for a public international meeting to debate how to learn from the work, safely. And they agreed to hold off on additional research with the existing lab-bred strains or that leads to any new ones for 60 days.

A U.S. official praised the development.

The moratorium "is a really good idea, because a lot of very important issues are at hand," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who expects most flu researchers doing such work to sign on. "There aren't a lot of people who are doing that, I can assure you."

The U.S. also wants international input; researchers are talking with the World Health Organization.

Today, the so-called H5N1 bird flu only occasionally infects people, mostly those who have close contact with sick poultry. But when it does, it's highly lethal. The lab-bred H5N1 strains were a surprise because they showed it was easier than previously thought for the virus to mutate in a way that lets it spread easily between at least some mammals ? in this case, ferrets.

Presbyterian group breaks away over gay clergy (Reuters)

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) ? Presbyterians opposed to gay clergy split from the church on Thursday, announcing in Orlando a new denomination called the Evangelical Covenant Order of Presbyterians.

More than 2,000 Presbyterians from 500 churches witnessed the launch of the new group, which was formed in reaction to a decision in July by the 2.3 million member Presbyterian Church (USA) to permit gay clergy, said John Crosby, president of the order.

"The problem is people are going to hell," John Ortberg, a leader of the splinter group and minister at the Menlo Park Presbyterian Church in California, said in a sermon to begin Thursday's events.

The new Presbyterian denomination coincides with recent comments by Pope Benedict, head of the 1.3 billion member Roman Catholic Church, describing gay marriage as one of several threats to traditional marriage that undermine "the future of humanity itself."

Crosby said he wants to prevent ECO from being branded as a one-issue movement, though some Presbyterians see the opposition to gay clergy as the driving reason behind the breakaway.

"For the average pew-sitter, that's what they perceive," said Phylis Ritscher, a staff member at the 600-member St. James Presbyterian Church in Littleton, Colorado.

Mark Hawke, a minister at First Presbyterian Church in Olathe, Kansas, said "the underlying issue is how you interpret scripture."

Hawke and Ritscher were among many who came to learn about ECO but whose churches have not committed to join.

ECO leaders speaking at the conference leveled other complaints against the Presbyterian Church including excessive bureaucracy, complacency, declining membership and the tendency to become a "big tent" religion, accommodating all at the expense of their reading of scripture.

"The tent has become so broad that it's falling down without center poles," Crosby said. "The (needed) tent pole is biblical authority understood in the orthodox community and that has implications for all sexuality."

Gradye Parsons, state clerk of the Presbyterian Church (USA) general assembly, disputed the splinter groups complaints, saying church bureaucracy has been cut in half over the past 25 years while promoting several initiatives to increase membership.

"It saddens me that they are deciding to leave us," Parsons said.

In lifting its ban on gay clergy, the Presbyterian Church joined the Episcopal Church, the United Church of Christ, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

ECO will allow churches to commit exclusively to the new denomination, as well as affiliate with ECO without dropping its membership in the Presbyterian Church.

The new group has no members yet, pending a process for individuals and churches to join.

After protest, Congress puts off movie piracy bill (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Caving to a massive campaign by Internet services and their millions of users, Congress indefinitely postponed legislation Friday to stop online piracy of movies and music costing U.S. companies billions of dollars every year. Critics said the bills would result in censorship and stifle Internet innovation.

The demise, at least for the time being, of the anti-piracy bills was a clear victory for Silicon Valley over Hollywood, which has campaigned for a tougher response to online piracy. The legislation also would cover the counterfeiting of drugs and car parts.

Congress' qualms underscored how Internet users can use their collective might to block those who want to change the system.

The battle over the future of the Internet also played out on a different front Thursday when a loose affiliation of hackers known as "Anonymous" shut down Justice Department websites for several hours and hacked the site of the Motion Picture Association of America after federal officials issued an indictment against Megaupload.com, one of the world's biggest file-sharing sites.

The site of the Hong Kong-based company was shut down, and the founder and three employees were arrested in New Zealand on U.S. accusations that they facilitated millions of illegal downloads of films, music and other content, costing copyright holders at least $500 million in lost revenue. New Zealand police raided homes and businesses linked to the founder, Kim Dotcom, on Friday and seized guns, millions of dollars and nearly $5 million in luxury cars, officials there said.

In the U.S., momentum against the Senate's Protect Intellectual Property Act and the House's Stop Online Piracy Act, known popularly as PIPA and SOPA, grew quickly on Wednesday when the online encyclopedia Wikipedia and other Web giants staged a one-day blackout and Google organized a petition drive that attracted more than 7 million participants.

That day alone, at least six senators who had co-sponsored the Senate legislation reversed their positions. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, in statements at the time and again on Friday, stressed that more consensus-building was needed before the legislation would be ready for a vote.

On Friday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he was postponing a test vote set for Tuesday "in light of recent events." House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith, R-Texas, followed suit, saying consideration of a similar House bill would be postponed "until there is wider agreement on a solution."

With opposition mounting, it was unlikely that Reid would have received the 60 votes needed to advance the legislation to the Senate floor.

The two bills would allow the Justice Department, and copyright holders, to seek court orders against foreign websites accused of copyright infringement. The legislation would bar online advertising networks and payment facilitators such as credit card companies from doing business with an alleged violator. They also would forbid search engines from linking to such sites.

The chief Senate sponsor, Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., cited estimates that copyright piracy costs the American economy more than $50 billion annually and that global sales of counterfeit goods via the Internet reached $135 billion in 2010. He and Smith insist that their bills target only foreign criminals and that there is nothing in them to require websites, Internet service providers, search engines or others to monitor their networks.

That didn't satisfy critics who said the legislation could force Internet companies to pre-screen user comments or videos, burden new and smaller websites with huge litigation costs and impede new investments.

The White House, while not taking a specific stand on the bills, last week said it would "not support any legislation that reduces freedom of expression ... or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet." On Friday, White House spokesman Jay Carney said online piracy is an issue that has to be addressed, "but everybody has to be in on it for it to work and get through Congress."

The scuttling, for now, of PIPA and SOPA frustrates what might have been one of the few opportunities to move significant legislation in an election year where the two parties have little motivation to cooperate.

Until recently "you would have thought this bill was teed up," with backing from key Senate leaders and support from powerful interest groups, said Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., who cosponsored the original bill but quickly dropped his backing on the grounds the bill could undermine innovation and Internet freedom.

Moran said the "uprising" of so many people with similar concerns was a "major turnaround, and in my experience it is something that has happened very rarely."

Moran said PIPA and SOPA now have "such a black eye" that it will be difficult to amend them. Reid, however, said that there had been progress in recent talks among the various stakeholders and "there is no reason that the legitimate issues raised by many about this bill cannot be resolved."

Jeff Chester, executive director for the Center for Digital Democracy, a consumer protection and privacy advocacy group, said Google and Facebook and their supporters "have delivered a powerful blow to the Hollywood lobby." He predicted a compromise that doesn't include what many see as overreaching provisions in the current legislation.

"It's been framed as an Internet freedom issue, but at the end of the day it will be decided on the narrow interests of the old and new media companies," he said. The big questions involve who should or shouldn't pay ? or be paid ? for Internet content.

Leahy said he respected Reid's decision to postpone the vote but lamented the Senate's unwillingness to debate his bill.

"The day will come when the senators who forced this move will look back and realize they made a knee-jerk reaction to a monumental problem," Leahy said. Criminals in China, Russia and other countries "who do nothing but peddle in counterfeit products and stolen American content are smugly watching how the United States Senate decided" it was not worth taking up the bill, he said.

In the House, Smith said he had "heard from the critics" and resolved that it was "clear that we need to revisit the approach on how best to address the problem of foreign thieves that steal and sell American inventions and products." Smith had planned on holding further committee votes on his bill next month.

The bill's opponents were relieved it was put on hold.

Markham Erickson, executive director of NetCoalition, commended Congress for "recognizing the serious collateral damage this bill could inflict on the Internet."

The group represents Internet and technology companies including Google, Yahoo and Amazon.com. Erickson said they would work with Congress "to address the problem of piracy without compromising innovation and free expression."

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., who has joined Sens. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and Moran in proposing an alternative anti-piracy bill, credited opponents with forcing lawmakers "to back away from an effort to ram through controversial legislation."

But the CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America, former Connecticut Democratic Sen. Chris Dodd, warned, "As a consequence of failing to act, there will continue to be a safe haven for foreign thieves." The MPAA, which represents such companies as Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation and Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., is a leading advocate for the anti-piracy legislation.

Child's body found after car swept away

By msnbc.com staff and news services

The Pacific Northwest storm that dumped snow across Washington and rain across Oregon claimed at least one life, that of a child swept into a overflowing creek by flooding. Witnesses said at least one, and possibly up to four others, are missing.

The child, 5, was with his?father in their car at a grocery store parking lot in Albany, Ore., when a witness said he saw the vehicle turn into the creek on Wednesday night.

As the car sank, the father?and one child were able to get out. Both were taken to a hospital,?with the child reportedly in critical condition.

The body of the?5-year-old was found later by rescue crews.

Some witnesses said up to three adults and four children were in the vehicle.

KPTV.com quoted?one witness as saying?he saw the driver turn into the creek, possibly thinking it was a road. He and his friend tried to save the people inside.

"I did what I thought I could. I tried to open the doors. The doors were obviously locked. When?he broke the window, I assumed the child in the back was old enough to get out through the window," Zach Williams said. "Apparently, it was just an infant."

Crews worked until 11 p.m. searching for the vehicle, which is believed to have been swept farther down the creek and into the underground culvert.

"No one can survive underwater this long," oregonlive.com quoted Albany Fire Department spokeswoman Wanda Omdahl as saying. "It's just so tragic."

Crews were returning to the site Thursday but divers were not expected to go in the culvert?until the flooding subsides.

Albany is 70 miles south of Portland, Ore.

Oil price rises on signs of improving US economy (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Oil prices are rising on fresh signs of an improving U.S. economy that could lead to stronger demand for gasoline and other energy products.

Benchmark oil rose 50 cents to $101.21 per barrel on Wednesday in New York. Brent crude fell 50 cents to $111.03 per barrel in London.

The Federal Reserve says factory production in December expanded by the most in a year, as consumers bought more vehicles and businesses spent more on machinery and computers.

Investors also are encouraged by news that the International Monetary Fund is seeking new funding resources to help struggling European countries.

Meanwhile, AAA says the national average for retail gas is $3.38 per gallon. That's about 16 cents more than a month ago and nearly 28 cents more than a year ago.

Social media widen scope of Nigeria fuel protests

A nationwide strike and demonstrations have unleashed years of pent-up frustrations in Nigeria over its kleptocratic leaders, and the rage has grown even stronger across social media this week.

Twitter users shared pictures of dead protesters while others broke down the oil-rich nation's 2012 budget figures, comparing funds allocated to the president and vice president's offices with the cost of living of the average Nigerian. Hackers have targeted government websites, while others criticized local news coverage of demonstrations in nation where journalists often accept bribes from those they cover.

"I think the government has opened a can of worms and we are now picking each one at a time," said Kola Oyeneyin, 31, an entrepreneur who uses Twitter to give protest updates.

Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets across Africa's most populous nation to protest the government's removal on Jan. 1 of a subsidy that had kept gasoline prices low for more than two decades. Overnight, prices at the pump more than doubled, from $1.70 per gallon (45 cents per liter) to at least $3.50 per gallon (94 cents per liter). The costs of food and transportation also doubled in a nation where most live on less than $2 a day.

President Goodluck Jonathan insists the move was necessary to save the country an estimated $8 billion a year, which he promises will go toward badly needed roads and public projects. But the president, who used Facebook to announce he would run in the nation's presidential elections last year, has faced increasingly angry comments on his own profile where most offered praise in the past.

'Occupy Nigeria'
Protesters ? who joined the current nationwide labor strike under the hash-tagged slogan of "Occupy Nigeria" ? say the government is in no position to ask people to sacrifice in a nation with extravagant government spending and a history of widespread theft of billions by military rulers and politicians.

Nigeria, an OPEC member nation producing about 2.4 million barrels of crude oil a day, is a top supplier to the U.S., but virtually all of its petroleum products are imported after years of graft, mismanagement and violence at its refineries.

"They (the government) are saying that they need to save. OK, but do you need to save by making us pay for your waste?" Oyeneyin asked.

The country only recently passed a Freedom of Information bill granting, in theory, public access to documents. But the nation's budgeting remains opaque at best in a nation that operated for years under an official secrets act that made unauthorized release of government information an imprisonable offense.

"People are now more informed about what's going on and it won't be long before we have an open and transparent government," said Ngozi Sulaiman, a businesswoman who was sending photos to her Blackberry contacts from a protest in a posh Lagos neighborhood.

False information spread
However, social media also has spread false information about government resignations in recent days as well. Text messages circulating the country also fed a rumor that a radical Islamist sect planned to infiltrate and bomb demonstrations.

A group of hackers also have attacked a series of government websites over several days, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Friday.

Eager to calm public anger, government-aligned groups have published front-page newspaper advertisements for days trying to sell Nigeria's more than 160 million people on the idea that money saved by removing fuel subsidies will go toward needed projects.

While Nigeria has an unruly free press, underpaid journalists often accept so-called "brown envelope" bribes slipped into briefing documents at news conferences. And at least one private news channel in the country has gotten calls from government officials asking it not to broadcast live images of a daily demonstration in Lagos that drew more than 20,000 people on Friday alone.

Criticism of news on the state-run Nigerian Television Authority also sparked a protest outside its Lagos headquarters by more than 1,000 people Thursday. The channel aired a short story on the protest 43 minutes into its nightly broadcast, after a host of pro-subsidy removal stories and commercials.

The protests will continue to be swayed by social media, despite low incomes, as Nigeria has the continent's top mobile phone market and is estimated to have the largest online audience in Africa.
