Salinas Teachers Union Says Class Size Holding Up Contract

April 5, 2013

A few more students can make a big difference.

Contract negotiations between the Salinas Valley Federation of Teachers and the Salinas Union High School District are at a standstill over class size, according to the president of the local teachers union.

The union wants a contract that enforces class size, because previous contracts have allowed for flexibility, usually meaning more students in classrooms.

Not only is this more work for the teachers, but it could mean students have to wait longer to get feedback on assignments, says Steve McDougall, president of the union.

The preferable class size is 29 students, but teachers regularly get more than 30 on average, McDougall says. One sticking point is that the district now overloads classes at the beginning of the year, expecting class sizes to drop later. McDougall says this worked when migrant student numbers were higher, but these days overloaded classes tend to stay that way.

The teachers? contract expired in the summer of 2011. Negotiations have been underway since then.

The high school district did not return a call for comment Thursday.
