Make Pill Bottles Easier to Open with Sugru [Sugru]

Make Pill Bottles Easier to Open with SugruIf you or a family member has arthritis opening standard child-safety pill bottles can be a real pain. Use a bit of Sugru to give the lid a textured grip that makes it easier to open.

This idea comes from Instructables user Surfer24. All you need for this hack is to open a packet of Sugru and mold it into a long "snake" shape. Wrap the Sugru around the the bottle lid tightly and let it cure for 24 hours before use.

If the same prescription is used every month remember to keep the lid to transfer to the new pill bottle. If you don't already have Sugru on hand you can order it from the official website for as little as 6 packets for $12.

White House comments on SOPA, won't support harmful legislation (Digital Trends)

stop-sopa-pipa

Yesterday brought some good news for opponents of the Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA, and other in-process legislation intended for use as a weapon against cyber-criminals. The official online voice of the White House ran a lengthy blog post detailing ?what the Administration will support?and what we will not support? if/when bills like SOPA and PIPA pass through Congress and land on President Barack Obama?s Oval Office desk.

The blog, penned by intellectual property enforcement coordinator Victoria Espinel, U.S. chief technology officer Aneesh Chopra and National Security Staff cybersecurity coordinator Howard Schmidt, clearly states at the outset that the White House ?will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet.? There?s no outright statement that SOPA will not be signed into law in its current form, but it?s strongly implied.

The blog post instead urges critics and lawmakers on all sides to come together in reasoned discussion, insisting ? not incorrectly ? that online piracy is a real issue which must be addressed. ?That is why the Administration calls on all sides to work together to pass sound legislation this year that provides prosecutors and rights holders new legal tools to combat online piracy originating beyond U.S. borders while staying true to the principles outlined above in this response,? the blog post reads. ?We should never let criminals hide behind a hollow embrace of legitimate American values.?

In related news, The Hill reports that House Majority Leader Eric Cantor won?t vote on SOPA specifically until a consensus has been reached. A statement from House Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa reads, ?While I remain concerned about Senate action on the Protect IP Act, I am confident that flawed legislation will not be taken up by this House. Majority Leader Cantor has assured me that we will continue to work to address outstanding concerns and work to build consensus prior to any anti-piracy legislation coming before the House for a vote.?

The controversial bill continues to be the subject of heavy discussion on the Internet. This week, on January 18, a number of prominent websites ? including Reddit ? will ?go dark? to support continued resistance to the bill.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? "The Artist" waltzed away with its first wins of Hollywood's awards season.

The black-and-white ode to the silent-film era directed by Michel Hazanavicius led winners with four honors at Thursday's 17th annual Critics' Choice Awards, which are presented by the 250 members of the Broadcast Film Critics Association.

"The Artist" took the evening's top prize, best picture, as well honors for best score, costume design and director.

"I made a silent movie," French director Hazanavicius joked in English while accepting the award for best picture. "I don't like to speak so much."

"The Help," the adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's best-selling novel about black maids speaking out about their white employers during the civil-rights movement, followed behind "The Artist" with three wins in the ceremony's acting categories: Viola Davis as best actress, Octavia Spencer as best supporting actress and the film's cast as best acting ensemble.

"I absolutely knew I wanted to be an actor because I wanted to be somebody," an emotional Davis said accepting her award. "I wanted to dream big and make a mark somehow. That's something absolutely that Aibileen was not afforded. I considered it my honor to pay homage to these women at this time period who were not allowed to dream and not allowed to find their purpose."

Others who accepted trophies at the lavish Hollywood Palladium ceremony included George Clooney as best actor for "The Descendants," Christopher Plummer as best supporting actor for "Beginners" and Thomas Horn as best young actor for "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close."

"Frankly, I didn't even imagine I would get this, but I have," beamed a surprised Horn.

Funnymen Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel hosted the ceremony, which was broadcast live on VH1.

Other winners included "Bridesmaids" as best comedy movie, "Drive" as best action movie, "Rango" as best animated feature, "Midnight in Paris" as best original screenplay, "Moneyball" as best adapted screenplay, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" for best editing and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" for best makeup and best sound.

MGM CEO James Murren: "Internet Gaming is Going to Pass in 2012 ...

Online Poker

Hopes for this being the year that federal legislation passes to license and regulate Internet poker received a boost last week when James Murren, chairman and CEO of MGM Resorts International, spoke confidently about the prospects on CNBC.

Asked about the Justice Department's recent conclusion that the Wire Act applies only to wire communications related to sports betting, Murren responded: "It means Internet gaming is going to pass here in 2012 in the United States."

Murren didn't preface his comment with "I think" or "hopefully." He just flat out stated that 2012 will be the year.

He did backtrack a bit by saying that he's not sure whether it will be done on the federal level or state by state. Nevada is expected to get its own intrastate poker network up and running later this year. If 2012 is only the start of online poker going state by state, it is still going to be a long process.

"It should be at the federal level, because that's where we can best regulate, prevent fraud, prevent underage gambling and get rid of the illegal gaming sites that still exist today with one uniform regulatory framework," Murren said. "If the federal government fails to act, state after state after state will approve Internet poker and it will proliferate on that basis."

Murren's thinking seems to back up the sentiment that the DOJ's new interpretation of the Wire Act will put pressure on Capitol Hill to get going on establishing an overall framework for Internet poker or watch the states do it. Because the Wire Act doesn't apply to online poker, states will be able to combine poker networks across state lines.

It's nice to get a major Las Vegas casino chairman talking positively about poker after Las Vegas Sands chairman Sheldon Adelson recently made vocal his opposition.

In October, MGM reached an agreement to join forces with Bwin.Party once Internet poker is officially legalized in the United States.

"It will be a multi-billion dollar business," Murren said. "It will be hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue to us as a company, billions to the industry, and it will happen this year."

Everything Bundesliga wanted to know about sex...

Which basic desires motivate us toward greatness on the athletic field? If you answered ?Ice cream and sex,? then Rex Ryan welcomes you to the Jets. If you just answered ?sex,? then you are Derek Jeter. If you?ve already forgotten the question, would you be interested in writing a guest column for this blog? You seem like Out of Bounds material.

But it may surprise you that athletes actually have 16 basic human desires, or so contends Ohio State psychologist Steven Reiss, who developed the Reiss motivation profile. That?s what one that German Bundesliga League soccer team Hanover is using this year to help coach Mirko Slomka ?familiarize? himself with his players. The fun part is that the Reiss motivation profile seems to be full of questions about sex. And not just basic questions ? it really wants to know what gets your freak on. Sample statements on the Reiss profile are:

?I am what you could call sexually unrestrained.?

?I want any sex I can get.?

?I have a lot of erotic fantasies.?

source: Players evaluate each statement on a scale of -3 to +3, and a team of psychologists then determine what makes them tick.

Smoke coming from laptop, which begins to wobble and shoot sparks.

PSYCHOLOGIST 1: ?You fool! I told you not to run Dennis Rodman?s profile!?

PSYCHOLOGIST 2: ?AiiEE! It?s in flames!?

PSYCHOLOGIST 1 (grabs fire extinguisher): ?Run! Save yourselves!?

Coach Slomka, according to the Guardian UK, said that he had already completed the 128 survey questions, and that the players were free to see his responses if they wanted. (Form an orderly line!) Slomka to Bild magazine: ?With this test I know how I can best reach each player.?

Yes, by phone, if I?m any judge of male pro athletes.

But Hanover is all in with this experiment, and has even hired a ?motivation consultant,? Peter Boltersdorf.

?Each player needs different conditions to perform at his best over a long period,? Boltersdorf said. ?This is what I have to look into. Every player should have the feeling that his individuality is being considered.?

The Guardian didn?t list them, but I looked around and found that Reiss? 16 basic human desires are: power, independence, curiosity, acceptance, order, saving, honor, idealism, social contact, family, status, vengeance, romance, eating, physical exercise, and tranquility. From Ohio State Research Communications:

?These desires are what drive our everyday actions and make us who we are,? Reiss said. ?What makes individuals unique is the combination and ranking of these desires.?

Reiss said at least 14 of the 16 basic desires seem to have a genetic basis. Only the desires for idealism and acceptance don?t appear to have a genetic component. ?Most of these desires are similar to those seen in animals, and seem to have some survival value,? Reiss said. ?This indicates they are genetic in origin.?

Is this part of what makes Tim Tebow unique? He could have elevated levels of idealism and order, and low amounts of vengeance and romance. If other NFL teams had used the Reiss survey prior to the draft, someone else might be riding the crest of the Tebow Rainbow right now.

What about Michael Vick? Could the Falcons have avoided a major headache with some pre-hand Reiss knowledge? Should the Colts send the sex questions to Andrew Luck? (?You dropped to the second round? What kind of freaky things are you into, Luck? You said the goat was just a pet!?).

Look, I know of few U.S. athletes who would answer this survey truthfully, or even take the time to fill it out (Hanover isn?t making it mandatory). Plus, who wants to examine the answers to hundreds of creepy sex questions? Well OK, Deadspin, but who else?

At any rate, look for far fewer contact fouls and red cards in the Bundesliga this season. No one is going to want to come within six yards of anyone else.

And in the 2014 World Cup final, Paul the Psychic Octopus chooses ? the missionary position?

Kerrey mulling comeback, revives Democratic hopes (AP)

OMAHA, Neb. ? More than a decade after he left this heartland state for New York City, former Sen. Bob Kerrey is considering an improbable comeback run for his old Senate seat, a prospect even he rates as a longshot.

"I would say if you bet ... you'd have to bet against me," Kerrey told The Associated Press this week. "I've been away 11 years. I'm a Democrat. Obama's going to top the ticket, and he's probably going to be unpopular. So I'd say the odds are probably not good."

Since the Senate was founded, only 22 senators have been re-elected to the chamber after a two-term or more gap, according to research by Eric Ostermeier, a research associate at the University of Minnesota, who runs the web site Smart Politics. An even smaller sliver of those, Ostermeier said, have occurred in the "modern era" of political campaigns.

Kerrey, now 68, is not the boyish figure who was elected governor in 1982 and grabbed headlines for briefly dating actress Debra Winger. But Kerrey, Democrats and Republicans seem to agree, is Nebraska Democrats' only hope of holding onto the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Ben Nelson, the man who replaced Kerrey when he retired.

How the Nebraska Senate race unfolds is pivotal for both parties: Republicans need to net four seats in the 2012 election to take back the Senate. If Kerrey doesn't make the race, Republicans are extremely confident they'll have one of the four seats they need.

Former state GOP chairman David Kramer concedes Kerrey is an "instantaneously credible" candidate. Kramer said he is skeptical, though, that Kerrey will be prepared for the rigors of a campaign.

Kerrey is currently on a five-to-six-day visit to his home state, which he says he'll use to determine whether to launch a campaign. He wants to decide quickly, he said, so he can clear the path for any other hopefuls who would otherwise stay out.

Though skeptics ? not least of which include Kerrey himself ? abound, there's recent precedent for a comeback.

Former GOP Sen. Dan Coats of Indiana ran in 2010 after more than a decade out of office and cruised to victory. Former White House spokesman Pete Seat, who worked on Coats' campaign, said candidates who reengage in politics after a long layoff take a while to "get their sea legs back." But he said natural politicians remain natural politicians.

"In many respects it's like riding a bike," Seat said. "It just takes a little bit of time to get back in the game."

Of course, unlike Coats, Kerrey is running in a state that's drifted ideologically away from him since he left. Kerrey's work history could also pose a problem: He left the Senate to become president of the New School, a self-described progressive university in Greenwich Village. While there, he thought about running again for the Senate in Nebraska and passed ? then considered a bid for mayor of New York City.

Kerrey did stay involved with government, working as a member of the 9/11 Commission, but Republicans are sure to highlight what he's been doing the last 10 years.

Kerrey's brushed off the prospect of a brutal campaign with trademark humor, though, alluding to his service as a Navy SEAL in Vietnam.

"It's not live rounds," Kerrey said. "It's not like Aaron Burr is challenging me to a duel."
