Colorectal Cancer Treatments | Medify | stoptbpartners.org

Learn About the Treatments for Colorectal Cancer

Patients with colorectal cancer have different treatment options, depending on the stage and aggressiveness of their cancer. The four standard treatments for colorectal cancer are surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and target therapy, as described below.

Surgery:

  • Local excision?removes the cancer and a small amount of surrounding healthy tissue. Surgeons will perform this procedure on patients whose cancer has not spread beyond the inside surface of the?rectum or colon.
  • Resection?if the cancer has spread into the wall of the rectum, doctors will remove it, along with a small amount of surrounding healthy tissue (partial colectomy), and then sew the healthy parts of the colon together (anastomosis). As part of this procedure, a doctor will remove?the lymph nodes?near the colon and examine them under a microscope for signs of cancer.
  • Cryosurgery?uses a special instrument to freeze and destroy abnormal tissue, such as carcinoma in situ. This treatment is also called?cryotherapy.

Following surgery, some patients may receive chemotherapy or radiation therapy to kill any cancer cells that might remain. This post-surgery treatment, called adjuvant therapy, lowers the risk that the cancer will return.

Chemotherapy:

Several different chemotherapy drugs help treat colorectal cancer. Often, two or more of these drugs are combined to make them more effective. For several decades, doctors have used 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) as a part of most chemotherapy regimens for colorectal cancer patients. Usually, patients receive 5-FU together with leucovorin (or folinic acid).

In general, doctors treat patients with 5-FU every two weeks, over a period of six months to a year. Some standard chemotherapy regimens that include 5-FU are these:

  • FOLFOX: 5-FU, leucovorin and oxaliplatin
  • FOLFIRI: 5-FU, leucovori and irinotecan
  • FOLFOXIRI: leucovorin, 5-FU, oxaliplatin and irinotecan

Radiation Therapy:

Radiation therapy?uses high-energy?x-rays?or other types of?radiation?to kill cancer cells or stop them from growing. Two types of radiation are available; doctors decide which one to use based on the type and stage of a patient?s cancer.

  • Eternal radiation?therapy?uses a machine outside the body to send radiation toward the cancer.
  • Internal radiation?places a radioactive substance sealed in needles,?seeds, wires or catheters?directly into or near the cancer.

Target Therapy:

Typically reserved for patients with advanced colon cancer, target therapy uses drugs aimed at specific defects that allow cancer cells to proliferate. Examples of target therapy include bevacizumab (Avastin), cetuximab (Erbitux) and panitumumab (Vectibix). Doctors may give targeted drugs alone or with chemotherapy.

Reading "White Coat, Black Hat" and discovering that ethicists might be black hats.

During one of my trips this spring, I had the opportunity to read Carl Elliott?s book White Coat, Black Hat: Adventures on the Dark Side of Medicine. It is not always the case that reading I do for my job also works as riveting reading for air travel, but this book holds its own against any of the appealing options at the airport bookstore. (I actually pounded through the entire thing before cracking open the other book I had with me, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet?s Nest, in case you were wondering.)

Elliott takes up a number of topics of importance in our current understanding of biomedical research and how to do it ethically. He considers the role of human subjects for hire, of ghostwriters in the production of medical papers, of physicians who act as consultants and spokespeople for pharmaceutical companies, and of salespeople for the pharmaceutical companies who interact with scientists and physicians. There are lots of important issues here, engagingly presented and followed to some provocative conclusions. But the chapter of the book that gave me the most to think about, perhaps not surprisingly, is the chapter called ?The Ethicists?.

You might think, since Elliott is writing a book that points out lots of ways that biomedical research could be more ethical, that he would present a picture where ethicists rush in and solve the problems created by unwitting research scientists, well-meaning physicians, and profit driven pharmaceutical company. However, Elliott presents instead reasons to worry that professional ethicists will contribute to the ethical tangles of the biomedical world rather than sorting them out. Indeed Elliott identifies what seem to be special vulnerabilities in the psyche of the professional ethicist. For example, he writes, ?There is no better way to enlist bioethicists in the cause of consumer capitalism than to convince them they are working for social justice.? (139-140) Who, after all, could be against social justice? Yet, when efforts on behalf of social justice takes the form of debates on television news programs about fair access to new pharmaceuticals, the big result seems to be free advertising for the companies making those pharmaceuticals. Should bioethicists be accountable for these unforeseen results? This chapter suggests that careful bioethicists ought to foresee them, and to take responsibility.

There is an irony in professionals who see part of their job as pointing out conflicts of interest to others that they may be placing themselves right in the path of equally overwhelming conflicts of interest. Some of these have to do with the practical problem of how to fund their professional work. Universities these days are struggling with reduced budgets, which means they are encouraging their faculty to be more entrepreneurial ? including by cultivating relationships that might lead to donations from the private sector. To the extent that bioethics is seen as relevant to pharmaceutical development, pharmaceutical companies, which have deeper pockets than do universities, are seen as attractive targets for fundraising.

As Elliott notes, bioethicists have seen a great deal of success in this endeavor. He writes,

For the last three decades bioethics has been vigorously generating new centers, new commissions, new journals, and new graduate programs, not to mention a highly politicized role in American public life. In the same way that sociologists saw their fortunes climb during the 1960s as the public eye turned towards social issues like poverty, crime, and education, bioethics started to ascend when medical care and scientific research began generating social questions of their own. As the field grows more prominent, bioethicists are considering a funding model familiar to the realm of business ethics, one that embraces partnership and collaboration with corporate sponsors as long as outright conflict of interest can be managed. ?

Corporate funding present a public relations challenge, of course. It looks unseemly for an ethicist to share in the profits of arms dealers, industrial polluters, or multinationals that exploit the developing world. Credibility is also a concern. Bioethicist teach about pharmaceutical company issues in university classrooms, write about those issues in books and articles, and comment on them in the press. Many bioethicists evaluate industry policies and practices for professional boards, government bodies, and research ethics committees. To critics, this raises legitimate questions about the field of bioethics itself. Where does the authority of ethicists come from, and why are corporations so willing to fund them? (140-141)

That comparison of bioethics to business, by the way, is the kind of thing that gets my attention; one of the spaces frequently assigned for ?Business and Professional Ethics? courses at my university is the Arthur Anderson Conference Room. Perhaps this is a permanent teachable moment, but I can?t help worry that really the lesson has to do with the vulnerability of the idealistic academic partner in the academic-corporate partnership.

Where does the authority of ethicist come from? I have scrawled in the margin something about appropriate academic credentials and good arguments. But connect this first question to Elliott?s second question: why are corporations so willing to fund them? Here, we need to consider the possibility that their credibility and professional status is, in a pragmatic sense, directly linked to corporations paying bioethicists for their labors. What, exactly, are those corporations paying for?

Let?s put that last question aside for a moment.

Arguably, the ethicist has some skills and training that render her a potentially useful partner for people trying to work out how to be ethical in the world. One hopes what she says would be informed by some amount of ethical education, serious scholarship, and decision-making strategies grounded in a real academic discipline.

Elliott notes that ?[s]ome scholars have recoiled, emphatically rejecting the notion that their voices should count more than others? on ethical affairs.? (142) Here, I agree if the claim is, in essence, that the interests of the bioethicists are no more important than others?. Surely the perspectives of others who are not ethicists matter, but one might reasonably expect that ethicists can add value, drawing on their experience in taking those interests, and the interest of other stakeholders, into account to make reasonable ethical decisions.

Maybe, though, those of us who do ethics for a living just tell ourselves we are engaged in a more or less objective decision-making process. Maybe the job we are doing is less like accounting and more like interpreting pictures in inkblots. As Elliott writes,

But ethical analysis does not really resemble a financial audit. If a company is cooking its books and the accountant closes his eyes to this fact in his audit, the accountant?s wrongdoing can be reliably detected and verified by outside monitors. It is not so easy with an ethics consultant. Ethicists have widely divergent views. They come from different religious standpoints, use different theoretical frameworks, and profess different political philosophies. Also free to change their minds at any point. How do you tell the difference between an office consultant who has changed her mind for legitimate reasons and one who has changed her mind for money? (144)

This impression of the fundamental squishiness of the ethicist?s stock in trade seems to be reinforced in a quote Elliott takes from biologist-entrepreneur Michael West: ?In the field of ethics, there are no ground rules, so it?s just one ethicist opinion versus another ethicist?s opinion. You?re not getting whether someone is right or wrong, because it all depends on who you pick.? (144-145)

Here, it will probably not surprise you to learn that I think these claims are only true when the ethicists are doing it wrong.

What, then, would be involved in doing it right? To start with, what one should ask from an ethicist should be more than just an opinion. One should also ask for an argument to support that opinion, an argument that makes reference to important details like interested parties, potential consequences of the various options for action on the table, the obligations the party making the decisions to the stakeholders, and so forth ? not to mention consideration of possible objections to this argument. It is fair, moreover, to ask the ethicist whether the recommended plan of action it is compatible with more than one ethical theory ? or, for example, if it only works in the world we are sharing solely with other Kantians.

This would not make auditing the ethical books as easy as auditing the financial statements, but I think it would demonstrate something like rigor and lend itself to meaningful inspection by others. Along the same lines, I think it would be completely reasonable, in the case that an ethicist has gone on record as changing her mind, to ask for the argument that brought her from one position to the other. It would also be fair to ask, what argument or evidence might bring you back again?

Of course, all of this assumes an ethicist arguing in good faith. It?s not clear that what I?ve described as crucial features of sound ethical reasoning couldn?t be mimicked by someone who wanted to appear to be a good ethicist without going to the trouble of actually being one.

And if there?s someone offering you money ? maybe a lot of money ? for something that looks like good ethical reasoning, is there a chance you could turn from an ethicist arguing in good faith to one who just looks like she is, perhaps without even being aware of it herself?

Elliott pushes us to examine whether the dangers that may lurk when the private-sector interests are willing to put up money for your ethical insight. Have they made a point of asking for your take primarily because your paper-trail of prior ethical argumentation lines us really well with what they would like an ethicist to say to give them cover to do what they already want to do ? not because it?s ethical, necessarily, but because it?s profitable or otherwise convenient? You may think your ethical stances are stable because they are well-reasoned (or maybe even right). But how can you be sure that the stability of your stance is not influenced by the size of your consultation paycheck? How can you tell that you have actually been solicited for an honest ethical assessment ? one that, potentially, could be at odds with what the corporation soliciting it wants to hear? If you tell that corporation that a certain course of action would be unethical, do you have any power to prevent them from pursuing that course of action? Do you have an incentive to tell the corporation what it wants to hear, not just to pick up your consulting fee, but to keep a seat at the table where you might hope to have a chance of nudging its behavior in a more ethical direction, even if only incrementally?

None of these are easy questions to answer objectively if you?re the ethicist in the scenario.

Indeed, even if money were not part of the equation, the very fact that people at the corporations ? or researchers, or physicians, or whoever it is seeking the ethicists? expertise ? are reaching out to ethicists and identifying them as experts with something worthwhile to contribute might itself make it harder for the ethicists to deliver what they think they should. As Elliott argues, the personal relationships may end up creating conflicts of interest that are at least as hard to manage as those that occur when money changes hands. These people asking for our ethical input seem like good folks, motivated at least in part by goals (like helping people with disease) that are noble. We want them to succeed. And we kind of dig that they seem interested in what we have to say. Because we end up liking them as people, we may find it hard to tell them things they don?t want to hear.

And ultimately, Elliott is arguing, barriers to delivering news that people don?t want to hear ? whether those barriers come from financial dependence, the professional prestige that comes when your talents are in demand, or developing personal relationships with the people you?re advising ? are barriers to being a credible ethicist. Bioethics becomes ?the public relations division of modern medicine? (151) rather than carrying on the tradition of gadflies like Socrates. If they were being Socratic gadflies and telling truth to power, Elliott suggests, we would surely be able to find at least a few examples of bioethics who were punished for their candor. Instead, we see the ties between ethicists and the entities they advise growing closer.

This strikes close to home for me, as I aspire to do work in ethics that can have real impacts on the practice of scientific knowledge-building, the training of new scientists, the interaction of scientists with the rest of the world. On the one hand, it seems to help me to understand the details of scientific activity, and the concerns of scientists and scientific trainees. But, if I ?go native? in the tribe of science, Elliott seems to be saying that I could end up dropping the ball as far as what it means to make the kind of contribution a proper ethicist should:

Bioethicists have gained recognition largely by carving out roles as trusted advisers. But embracing the role of trusted adviser means forgoing other potential roles, such as that of the critic. It means giving up on pressuring institutions from the outside, in the manner of investigative reporters. As bioethicists seek to become trusted advisers, rather than gadflies or watchdogs, it will not be surprising if they slowly come to resemble the people they are trusted to advise. And when that happens, moral compromise will be unnecessary, because there will be little left to compromise. (170)

This is strong stuff ? the kind of stuff which, if taken seriously, I hope can keep me on track to offer honest advice even when it?s not what the people or institutions to whom I?m offering it want to hear. Heeding the warnings of a gadfly like Carl Elliott might just help an ethicist do what she has to do to be able to trust herself.

The Benefits Of Working With A Rochester Mn Realtor | Real Estate ...

There are many benefits to working with a Rochester MN real estate agent. When you have finally decided to find a house to buy in the Rochester area, the assistance of a professional real estate agent will be invaluable to you. There are many critical factors that need to be considered when you are purchasing a new home. A house is one of an individual?s biggest investments over the course of his or her lifetime and choosing which property to buy can be a complicated decision. A professional real estate agent will have a thorough understanding of the many laws governing the local real estate market. Your agent will also be able to competently guide you through the many complicated legal issues involved in purchasing a home.

One of the primary reasons that it is so advantageous to work with a Rochester MN real estate agent is that the agent will have access to the premier real estate database of homes for sale. This database is called the Multiple Listing Service or MLS for short. The MLS listings will provide your agent with an abundance of information about the various homes for sale in Rochester MN. The MLS also plays a critical role in facilitating real estate transactions because of all the marketing data it offers to potential buyers through their agents. A good realtor will also continually monitor and study current real estate trends in the Rochester area to ensure that their clients have access to all the latest information and can make prudent buying decisions.

Ecotourism Does Not Overly Stress Orangutans, Study Finds

orangutanWhat can poop tell us about orangutans? Well, for one thing, a study of wild orangutan feces has revealed that these great apes, unlike some other species, are not chronically stressed by ecotourism.

Scat shows no scare in a study, published March 15 in PLoS One, that analyzed fecal glucocorticoid metabolite (fGM) levels of Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) in the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary in in the Malaysian state of Sabah between 2008 and 2009. The community-operated organization Red Ape Encounters, which operates there, maintains strict ecotourism guidelines designed to protect the apes.

The research team collected feces samples 24 hours before ecotourism visits, as well as the day of and the day after. Many of the samples came from two orangutans?Jenny, a then-32-year-old female, and Etin, her 11-year-old offspring?both of whom were gradually habituated to encounters with ecotourists over a period of several years. The rest came from four other unidentified orangutans that were not habituated to humans. In each case, the samples collected the day after the encounters showed elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol. But that wasn?t necessarily a bad thing.

?An elevated cortisol level in response to ecotourists would be completely natural and expected,? says the study?s lead author, Michael P. Muehlenbein, professor of anthropology at Indiana University Bloomington. ?It just means an activation of the sympathetic nervous system. Short-term fluctuation of cortisol levels is completely to be expected under most circumstances.?

Muehlenbein and his fellow researchers were concerned that the orangutans might have shown extremely elevated levels of cortisol or none at all. That would have indicated levels of chronic stress and a systemic breakdown in the animals, as has occurred in some other species regularly encountered by ecotourists. For example, yellow-eyed penguins (Megadyptes antipodes) have exhibited significantly lowered breeding success in populations exposed to tourism, while ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) showed degraded fur coats. (The paper equates these reactions to post-traumatic stress disorder in humans.)

But short-term fluctuations showed, at least on an fGM level, that the orangutans were not exhibiting signs of chronic stress. ?You need the fight-or-flight response,? Muehlenbein says. ?If you become habituated to a process, and you don?t react accordingly when there?s a danger, then you have a problem.?

Muehlenbein says the fGM test is just one more item in the veterinary or conservation toolbox to make sure that animals encountering humans are healthy. ?Cortisol metabolites are very sensitive to a number of things, such as disease, diet and sexual activity. It?s not a perfect measure. It should be combined with the other tools that we already have.?

According to the paper, tourism accounts for 9 percent of world GDP and can contribute greatly to conservation efforts for rare species. In the case of orangutans, at least, ecotourism done right does not appear to be harming the apes in the process. Red Ape Encounters?s guidelines limit visitations to groups of seven and a period of one hour. Sick tourists are excluded, and all visitors must keep a 10-meter minimum distance between themselves and the orangutans.

Muehlenbein is now working at a nearby orangutan rehabilitation center, where he is interviewing ecotourists about their behavior to try to calculate the risk for disease transmission from humans to animals. Apes have been known to catch coughs, colds and other viruses from humans, which can prove fatal. Although this human-to-primate transmission has been documented, there is no conclusive evidence to date of disease transmission from tourists to apes. ?We know that a significant number of travelers visit ecotourist sites even though they haven?t been well-enough vaccinated or they show signs of illness,? Muehlenbein says. Some orangutan tourism sites might habituate their animals more rapidly, overexpose them to humans or even allow people to touch or feed the apes, all of which could contribute to chronic stress and, in turn, make the orangutans more susceptible to human diseases. ?Humans pose an undocumented risk. We should put time, money and effort into hiring health professionals at these primate-based destinations and educating tourists about the risk of disease transmission.?

Useful Tricks For Home Improvement | Article Gurus

A lot of people assume that home improvement is just too overwhelming to bother tackling. However, this isn?t true if you can keep an open mind. In the following article, you will be provided with information to help you with your home improvements.

If you are doing any physical exercise outdoors in the heat, you can forget how much time you have spent working out. Staying hydrated is just as essential as safety equipment when it?s hot outside. Remember to take breaks when it comes to manual labor to enjoy your work as well as time to hydrate.

Make sure your plumbing system if properly insulated before winter comes. This should make your system more efficient and keep your hot water hot. Weatherizing tape is easy to apply to plumbing and available from many retailers. The tape plugs into your home?s electrical supply and keep the pipes above the freezing point.

When planning a home improvement project, take care of rewiring and plumbing issues first. These types of repairs usually require access inside your walls, so it makes sense to do them before you have other work done. If you are already repairing or replacing walls, then this is an ideal time to get plumbing or electrical work done.

Take advantage of your outdoor space. A nicely-decorated backyard can be a functional living space, as well. This creates an idyllic outdoor environment for relaxing or cooking out with the family.

To get solid input on which home improvements can increase the value of your home the most, ask your real estate agent. They are knowledgeable as to what people desire when purchasing a home.

Rely on your creativity and unique personality to design original projects. While this is a good idea, you should also make sure that each improvement is practical.

To sum things up, home improvement projects need not feel overwhelming. When making such repairs, remember to always keep an open mind. Everything in this article has been carefully chosen to give you the most vital information that you will need in making home improvements. By using these tips, you can update your home quickly!

6 children, 2 adults killed in W.Va. house fire

Jerry Waters / AP

Firefighters and city officials look over the scene of a deadly house fire on Saturday in Charleston, W.Va.

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated 4:33 p.m. ET: CHARLESTON, W.Va. --??Eight people, including a woman celebrating her 26th birthday and six young children, were killed early Saturday when fire swept through a two-story home while they slept.

A?seventh child was?also hurt in the blaze, which was reported around 3:30 a.m., and was in critical condition.?

It was not immediately clear what caused the blaze, which?appeared to have started in a front room on the first floor.

When firefighters arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames, said Bob Sharp, assistant chief for the Charleston Fire Department. They found four people upstairs and five downstairs; all died except for one child. A tenth person escaped to a neighbor's house and called 911, Sharp said.

NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.

All of the children who died were 8 years old or younger.

Charleston Mayor Danny Jones said the two-story wood frame home did not have a working smoke detector.

There was one smoke detector in the kitchen but it was installed too low and would have taken too long to activate, Sharp said. Another broken smoke detector was found near the basement - so essentially there were no working detectors.

"That means people couldn't have been alerted," Jones said. "They didn't have a chance."

The victims, some identified by only their first names, were Alisha Carter-Camp, 26; Alex Seal, an adult, age unavailable;?Keahna Camp, 8;?Jeremiah Camp, Elijah Scott, ?3; Kiki, 3; Gigi, 3; and?Emanuel Jones,?18 months.

Carter-Camp lived at the home with her children and her sister's children, WSAZ-V reported.

The sister, Latasha Isabelle-Jones, 24, was outside the home when it started to burn and was not injured. A 7-year-old boy, Bryan Timothy Camp, also survived and was listed in critical condition at a hospital.

"We have reason to believe that a lot of the people stayed in the house more than one night and maybe on a weekly basis," Jones said. "These people may have had residences in other places, but a lot of people lived in this house."

Carter-Camp's 26th birthday was Saturday, and a party was being held at the home for her, authorities said.

People started showing up for the party around 2 p.m. Friday and it started outside an hour later with a cookout and toasts to the birthday girl.

"They were nice people drinking a glass of wine," said Roxie Means,?who attended the party Friday her 14-year-old daughter, Cassie. "They weren't drunk. They weren't overdoing anything."

And before she left, Carter-Camp's two children wanted to know if she would be back on Saturday.

"I was telling the kids good night," Cassie Means said. One of the children asked her, "'Cassie, are you coming over to play with us tomorrow?' I said, 'yeah.'"

The child continued, "'you promise me you'll be here tomorrow?'" Cassie Means recalled. "I said, 'I promise you I'll be here when you wake up to play with you. I'll be here right when you wake up."

Hours later, the only adult survivor was smoking a cigarette outside, noticed the fire and came running to Means' home and started "beating down the door," Roxie Means said.

Investigators believe that all of the victims were asleep at the time of the fire and died of smoke inhalation.

Jones said?it?was the worst house fire Charleston has ever seen in terms of loss of life. In 1949,?a?fire at the Woolworth department store in downtown Charleston killed seven firefighters, according to the Gazette.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.

NBA: Jeremy Lin?s Lawyers Go After Shop Selling ?Linsanity? Marijuana

Posted by Sabrina B.?@gametimegirl

Warning to marijuana shops selling Linsanity weed: Your buzzkill has arrived.

Jeremy Lin?s legal team has sent a flurry of cease-and-desist letters to medical marijuana dispensaries offering ?Linsanity? brand pot, and a few shops have already complied, a lawyer for the New York Knicks star told The Huffington Post on Wednesday.

?Their enthusiasm for Jeremy Lin got ahead of their understanding of the law,? said Pamela Deese of the Washington, D.C., firm Arent Fox.

Although Deese would not name the companies, HuffPost found at least three California dispensaries that have stopped their doobie-ous enterprise.

The owner of 420 Specialists of Moreno Valley confirmed that he had received the notice and deleted Linsanity from the menu a week and a half ago. ?They also wanted me to write a letter of apology,? Josh Leibowitz said Thursday, adding that he hasn?t done so yet.

Gourmet Green Room of West Los Angeles would only say that it had?replaced Linsanity with Insanity.

L.A. Confidential Caregivers?in Hollywood, which was listed in a Marijuana.com post about?Linsanity sellers, seems to have removed Linsanity from its menu as well. We reached out to L.A. Confidential Thursday morning, and we?ll provide an update if it responds.

Word of Linsanity reefer madness spread when rappers?Rick Ross and Stalley tweeted?in early March aboutLinsanity OG cannabis, providing photos. As the jar in one photo indicated, Linsanity OG was priced at $60 for an eighth of an ounce.

That was back when Linsanity, the popular label for Lin?s rise from benchwarmer to star, had apparently already peaked. But now that the Knicks have won five straight as of Thursday, with Lin as the?fourth-quarter hero?in Wednesday?s victory, companies might be looking to cash in again.

There were an estimated 1,000 state-legalized pot shops in California before a recentfederal crackdown. Five or six are violating Lin?s rights, according to the NBA player?s attorney. ?We?ve identified those entities,? said Deese, who also wouldn?t share their names.

94% Undefeated

All Critics (69) | Top Critics (29) | Fresh (65) | Rotten (4)

Volunteer high school coach Bill Courtney says, "Football doesn't build character. Football reveals character." The triumphant sports documentary "Undefeated" proves that it does both.

[A] stirring, emotional portrait of a high school football team in the impoverished neighborhood of North Memphis, Tenn.

It's a bit too long and a bit too vague at times, but this is a film about dedication, progress and the bond of human effort. It just also happens to include football.

"Undefeated'' needs less of what we know we've seen (the football stuff) and more of the players' and coaches' lives, which even if we feel we've seen, we haven't.

What makes this a terrific film is how much we care about the players.

For all its good intentions, the film, like its main subject, is a tourist, earning trust as it earnestly captures the incredible struggles of these young men, but never digging deep enough to actually make the story theirs.

A touching documentary that offers a field-level portrait of male mentorship, compassion and unvarnished hope - all without a Hollywood ending.

It is a powerful reminder of the difference one person can make -- and of the consequences when no one is willing to make that difference.

What lifts 'Undefeated' above other sports docs is the remarkable force of Bill Courtney's personality.

It may call to mind The Blind Side or Remember the Titans, but there's no Hollywood glitz in the blighted burg of Manassas.

I regret that we don't meet more of Courtney's players, but that might have required a miniseries rather than a movie. And "Undefeated" makes sure the coach who is its central figure is more complex and fascinating than most fictional movie characters.

...an inspirational and often touching film that lets us get to know a dedicated coach who has faith in his players and delivers what he promises (almost).

This is a film that doesn't cater only to the traditional football fan.

In introducing us to [Coach] Courtney...Undefeated finds its voice

Just like a well-fought playoff win, it'll leave you a little misty-eyed.

This is one of the best sports documentaries of the last few years and while I don't think it should have won in a VERY good year for non-fiction film, I'm really not upset at all that it did.

Finds the warmth and vulnerability that is sometimes hard for outsiders to see beneath the rough, damaged exterior of the impoverished Memphis neighborhood where much of the action takes place.

The hardened inner-city kids here are far more authentic than anything Hollywood can offer, and as a result the film has a raw emotional weight that commercial features rarely achieve.
