Dawn mission video shows Vesta's coat of many colors

ScienceDaily (June 6, 2012) ? A new video from NASA's Dawn mission reveals the dappled, variegated surface of the giant asteroid Vesta. The animation drapes high-resolution false color images over a 3-D model of the Vesta terrain constructed from Dawn's observations. This visualization enables a detailed view of the variation in the material properties of Vesta in the context of its topography.

The colors were chosen to highlight differences in surface composition that are too subtle for the human eye to see. Scientists are still analyzing what some of the colors mean for the composition of the surface. But it is clear that the orange material thrown out from some impact craters is different from the surrounding surface material. Green shows the relative abundance of iron. Parts of the huge impact basin known as Rheasilvia in Vesta's southern hemisphere, for instance, have areas with less iron than nearby areas.

Dawn has imaged the majority of the surface of Vesta with the framing camera to provide this 3-D map. While some areas in the north were in shadow at the time the images were obtained by the camera, Dawn expects to improve its coverage of Vesta's northern hemisphere with additional observations. Dawn's viewing geometry also prevented mapping of a portion of the mountain of the south pole.

The spacecraft is currently spiraling up from its lowest-altitude orbit into its final science orbit, where its average altitude will be about 420 miles (680 kilometers). Dawn is scheduled to leave Vesta around Aug. 26.

The Dawn mission is managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., for the agency's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Dawn is a project of the directorate's Discovery Program, managed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. UCLA is responsible for overall Dawn mission science. Orbital Sciences Corp. of Dulles, Va., designed and built the Dawn spacecraft. The framing cameras were developed and built under the leadership of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Katlenburg-Lindau, Germany. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) Institute of Planetary Research in Berlin made significant contributions in coordination with the Institute of Computer and Communication Network Engineering in Braunschweig. The framing camera project is funded by the Max Planck Society, DLR and NASA. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

Protein knots gain new evolutionary significance

A new study suggests that protein knots, a structure whose formation remains a mystery, may have specific functional advantages that depend on the nature of the protein's architecture.

"The presence of a knotted or slipknotted structure in a protein is relatively rare but really is very interesting," said Kenneth Millett, a professor of mathematics at UC Santa Barbara and a co-author of the paper, "Conservation of complex knotting and slipknotting patterns in proteins," published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Relatively little is known about protein folding, the process by which a polypeptide chain with a specific sequence of amino acid chains forms the three-dimensional structures ?? their "native states" ?? required to become functional. How this process reproducibly achieves the required structure is the subject of intensive study. Even harder is understanding how this is accomplished for knotted proteins, where the chain loops around itself in entanglements of varying complexity; or the even rarer slipknotted proteins, where a loop is bound by another segment of the protein chain, similar to a shoelace bow.

What intrigued the scientists about the protein knots is that the folding process resulting in the formation of knots is intrinsically more difficult than the process producing unknotted proteins. The protein has to avoid not only energetic traps but also topological barriers. If an amino acid chain takes too much time to find its native state or if it is stuck in a misfolded or partially unfolded state, the result may be a useless protein or one that produces harm by causing protein aggregation which is known to cause neurodegenerative disorders.

"From an evolutionary point of view, knotting might seem unlikely to occur but, in fact, it does occur," said Millett, who, along with co-first authors Joanna Sulkowska from UC San Diego and Eric J. Rawdon from the University of Saint Thomas and with Jose N. Onuchic from Rice University and Andrzej Stasiak from the University of Lausanne, examined, analyzed, and classified 74,223 protein structures submitted to the Protein Data Bank for the location and formation of knots. Millett worked on the development of the mathematical theory and the computer implementation needed to identify the location and type of knots in the proteins studied in the paper.

What they found was that protein knots and slipknots, instead of being discarded through the process of evolution, are often strongly conserved. This suggests that, despite their reduced efficiency of folding, the knots are somehow advantageous and important to the function of the protein.

Additionally, the researchers found that the location of these knots and slipknots is highly conserved, marked by points of flexibility ?? "hinges" ?? in the chain that may have properties necessary for more efficient folding.

Knots and slipknots could contribute to the stability of the protein, as shown by the similar slipknot loops observed in several families of proteins that form transmembrane channels ?? the ducts through membranes of a cell, that allow certain materials to pass through. The slipknot, according to the authors, seems to strap together several transmembrane structures giving stability and forming the channel needed to allow passage through cell membranes.

The researchers will continue their study of the little-understood process of protein folding and knotting, said Millett.

"These knots may help to identify features that turn out to be important, and aspects of the structure that are more generalizable. We need to clearly understand how these things come to be, what are the implications of their structure, and how might one be able to somehow guide them," said Millett.

SEATTLE (AP) ? For many in Seattle, the image of a typical cyclist is a Spandex-clad, yellow-jacketed two-wheeled warrior who braves the steep streets of this city.

But as the city prepares to overhaul its five-year-old bike plan, some want to make the city safer and friendlier to those not so accustomed to navigating the streets on two wheels.

There's a new push to get "willing but wary" cyclists on their saddles with protected bike lanes buffered from traffic, designated bicycling boulevards where traffic is slowed and walkers and bikers have priority, and traffic calming features like speed bumps.

"We want to make sure we're building infrastructure for people who are eight or 80," and not just for the more experienced commuters, said Blake Trask, statewide policy director for the Washington Bicycle Alliance who formerly headed Seattle's bike advisory board.

The city is planning to build seven miles of walking and biking boulevards in five neighborhoods this year, with more likely on the way. So-called neighborhood greenways modeled after ones in Portland, Ore., are designed to make it safer for walkers and bikers to get between their home and school, the grocery store and park.

The city is taking public comment on the new plan, which would also consider features that separate cyclists from cars, called cycle tracks. They're common in bike-friendly European cities like Copenhagen and Amsterdam, but more U.S. cities such as Washington, D.C., and New York City are trying them out.

Still, any talk of bike improvements in Seattle is sure to stoke resentment from some, who believe the city's policies favor bike and transit over cars. Local talk-show hosts and columnists have ranted against what they call the city's anti-car campaign.

It hasn't helped that the city's most famous biker, Mayor Mike McGinn, sometimes known as "Mayor McSchwinn" for his enthusiasm about two-wheeled transportation, has irked some by increasing parking rates downtown and backing a measure to tax cars to pay for transit and bike improvements that even tax-friendly Seattleites rejected.

"We don't have a problem with the city investing in bike infrastructure," said Michael Ennis, transportation director for the conservative Washington Policy Center. "It's just when it's at the expense of auto lanes, then we start running into issues of fairness."

Seattle is losing unrestricted highway car lanes to transit and carpool lanes in various highway projects, including the Alaskan Way Viaduct and State Route 520, he noted. The city also put some streets on "road diets," shrinking car lanes to improve safety for cars and pedestrians.

"People see the visible painting of bike lanes and in some cases the narrowing of streets and perceive that as evidence that the city is spending more on bicycles than cars," said Seattle City Councilmember Tom Rasmussen, who heads the transportation committee.

Most of the city's transportation dollars go to streets, potholes and other street improvements, he said. Seattle spent about $9 million annually for the past four years on bicycling improvements, a small fraction of the city's total transportation budget of $300 million, Rasmussen said.

Councilmember and frequent bike commuter Mike O'Brien dismisses any talk of a "war on cars."

"No one is trying to force anyone to pick mode of transportation," said O'Brien. "It's not about taking away someone's car keys and demanding they get on a bike. But for people who do want to do it, they have a right to be safe getting back and forth to where they need to go."

As the city overhauls a plan currently aimed at tripling the number of cyclists in the city, many say they'd want features that cater to a broad range of riders.

The current plan "is working great for people who are already comfortable biking in the city," said Dylan Ahearn, who helped form Beacon BIKES after feeling the plan did a lot for commuters getting downtown but not as much for those getting around neighborhoods. "There's a wider segment of the population that could be served if they (the streets) were safer."

Ahearn says he understands the angst that motorists can feel toward cyclists. Neighborhood greenways with slower speed limits, signs, crosswalks and other features could help resolve some tension between them, he said.

Greenways "protect people by re-envisioning neighborhood streets as great public spaces, great community places," said Cathy Tuttle, coordinator of Seattle Neighborhood Greenways.

Tim King is working with other parents in Seattle to encourage more kids to bike to school. His 11-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son often bike by themselves about a half-mile to school.

He wants to see as many greenways as possible but he also favors dramatically lowering the speed limits in residential neighborhoods so people can pick the cycling route that's best for them.

"Seattle is a hard place to commute. I've spent a lot of time riding in Portland. It's easier to see how they have better ridership," he said, adding "it's tough to ride here. We've got our work cut out for us."

Google: No Chrome OS tablet, but Android convergence coming

Speaking with TechRadar about the Chrome OS devices announced earlier this week, Google's VP of engineering Linus Upson dropped a few nuggets of information regarding the future of the company's operating systems. For one thing, there will be no Chrome OS tablet, so you can give up waiting on that. But he also indicated that Chrome and Android would see "more and more convergence."

What that means specifically he wouldn't say, but clearly there are advantages to both approaches. Chrome OS boots extremely quickly and is laser-focused on Web content. Android is highly customizable and features thousands of apps. But they don't intend to just hybridize the two, he says:

Microsoft demonstrated quite convincingly earlier this century that if you take one environment and jam it across all devices it wasn't going to work so now you see a lot more caution.??Apple doesn't try to smash the two together and we're not trying to do it, but in time there will be a seamless user experience across all the devices.

The main issue is that people just use phones and computers differently. You've got a trackpad on one, a touchscreen on the other. One goes in your pocket, another goes in your bag. One lets you speak into it comfortably, one lets you type into it comfortably.

And neither one is disappearing in the foreseeable future, so it makes sense to cater to both. But that doesn't mean they can't learn from each other; why not let Chrome OS run Android apps in little windows? Why not let Android's browser sync with Chrome OS and borrow its windowed look for multitasking?

There hasn't been much communication regarding the two platforms' relationship, and some see it as competitive. But Upson says it's more collaborative, though they have indeed had to mature at different rates. For one thing, the ARM chips that run Android phones weren't fast enough to run the full version of Chrome until just recently. So while Chromebooks won't be moving over from Intel processors just yet, Android devices will be getting more of a full Chrome experience.

We'll probably know more come late June, when Google has its I/O developer conference. Historically, new versions of software debut there, as well as indications about what's coming next. This year a new tablet is expected, and news on the next version of Android -- rumored to be called Jellybean.

For a day filled with the per-fect blend of family-friendly creativity, pony rides, and bounce houses, look no further than Kid-a-palooza. The annual, one-day festival event showcases the talents of youth in music, dance, art and entertainment, and provides an opportunity for kids to display their talent to the public.

Produced by Wilmington Parent Magazine, in collaboration with Learning Express Toys and Kids Exchange Biannual Consignment Sale, this year?s Kid-a-palooza will be held at the Cameron Art Museum. The museum will lend its grounds and classrooms from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a unique experience that allows children to tap into and explore their artistic potential.

?Children love the opportunity to do hands-on activities,? Georgia Mastroieni, curator of education at CAM, says. ?It allows them to create, have fun and build confidence. Art-centered events foster their imaginations and teach children how to collaborate with their friends.?

CAM is certainly no stranger to family-oriented events. The museum is dedicated to integrating children into the arts, with their family days, afterschool classes and the popular monthly Kids @ CAM program, which allows children to explore museum exhibitions and create hands-on art projects.

?For this year?s [Kid-a-palooza], we were looking for a central location with outdoor space and parking, and CAM was an excellent fit, with their [numerous] youth programs,? the publisher of Wilmington Parent Magazine, Keith Jaworski, says. ?It?s a great resource for families, and we hope the event showcases some of their offerings.?

CAM also offers the Kids @ Camp, a creative outdoor art camp that is offered during several four-day sessions throughout the summer. (There will be a table at Kid-a-palooza that offers information about all of these events.) Children will also be given an opportunity to work together at a craft table, where they will take part in a collaborative mural that will be on display at Kids @ CAM on June 16th.

?Participation in the art mural makes the experience of art-making so meaningful,? says Kim Kelly, CAM?s communications manager.

Kid-a-palooza promises a completely different lineup of entertainment and demonstrations from last year, as each act has something new to offer. This year storyteller Diane Bonney will read the beloved children?s picture book ?Skippyjon Jones.? A local schools? art show, held in the CAM Museum School, will feature work by students from Wilmington Christian Academy, Music School of Wilmington Band, St. Nicholas Children?s Greek Dancers and the dance group Best Foot Forward, from Wrightsville Beach Elementary.

CAM will be offering free art classes during the event, too. Covering subjects ranging from pottery to photography, demonstrations of CAM?s Master Classes will also be held in The Museum School. Beginning in June, Master Classes are week-long programs taught by professional artists for middle and high school students.

?These are classes in the visual arts, dance and creative writing for students who are serious about the arts,? Kelly says. ?This gives students an opportunity to gain instruction from professional artists and learn what being a professional artist entails.?

The YMCA, Taekwondo Martial Arts, Jazzercise and Port City Gymnastics will also join the party, offering demonstrations throughout the day.

?Events like this offer kids the opportunity to perform in public, or showcase their talent,? Jaworski says. ?Their hard work and dedication to the arts deserves recognition.?
